June 9 Notes

- Dropping off the list: Pablo López (97th), Corbin Burnes (178th), Shea Langeliers (204th), Zebby Matthews (242nd), Luke Weaver (247th), Brandon Pfaadt (253rd), Tony Gonsolin (255th), Shane Bieber (265th), José Soriano (268th), Josh Bell (290th), Lenyn Sosa (294th), Nick Loftin (298th)

- Eight players dropped off the top 300 because of injuries this week, which is an unfortunate season high. I considered putting Pablo López, out 8-12 weeks with a shoulder strain, somewhere towards the bottom of the list, but there’s too much uncertainty in his diagnosis. He’ll probably reappear in a few weeks.

- Roman Anthony finally got the call Monday after batting .288/.423/.491 with 10 homers in 265 plate appearances for Triple-A Worcester, and he moves up to No. 146 in the rankings. It seems unlikely that he’ll try many steals after going just 3-for-6 there in Triple-A, but he should put up strong power numbers and hit for a decent average. I’m hoping he won’t be in a full platoon like Marcelo Mayer is, though it’s hard to blame the Red Sox for wanting to make sure Rob Refsnyder starts against every lefty. Anthony was hitting .367 against lefties in Triple-A, though he has less power against them than righties.

- It looks like Wilyer Abreu is going on the IL to make room for Anthony, so Ceddanne Rafaela can keep playing regularly for now. No word yet as of the update what’s wrong with Abreu, so I’m just sticking him at No. 182 in the hopes that it’s a short absence.

- Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who opened the season at No. 161 before falling off due to his back problems, is the high addition to the list this week, coming in at No. 179. Because I wasn’t certain what kind of role he would have in Cincinnati, I didn’t put him back on the list as his return neared. Fortunately, hitting three homers in his first three games since being activated has settled things for now. He’s still awfully far from a sure thing, but it’s entirely possible that he’ll be good for 15-20 homers and 50-60 RBI over the final 60% of the season.

- I’ve been steadily dropping Ben Rice in the rankings in recent weeks out of cause for concern about his role on the Yankees after Giancarlo Stanton returns. He’s also slumped of late, which has made it easier. Still, it’d have him in the 150-170 range if not for Stanton, who is about to begin a rehab assignment as he attempts to return from his elbow problems. Rice is No. 245 this week.

- Not that it seemed likely that they’d make a change, but Ryan Ritter was building a great case to become the Rockies’ second baseman before Ezequiel Tovar got hurt, opening up room at his natural position. The 24-year-old Ritter was batting .305/.413/.635 with 16 homers in 52 games for Triple-A Albuquerque before getting promoted last week. He’s hardly a top prospect, and he wouldn’t have cracked the list here if not for Coors Field, but he has decent enough pop, and while he doesn’t project as a quality hitter for average, Coors will help there. He’ll also probably sport a nice walk rate. I stuck him at No. 290 in the hopes that he’ll outhit Thairo Estrada these next few weeks and force the Rockies to keep him around.

- Mets infielder Ronny Mauricio edged out Drake Baldwin, Tyler Freeman and Tommy Kahnle for the final spot on the list. I’m not at all positive that’s the right call, since Mark Vientos (hamstring) and Jesse Winker (oblique) could both return before the end of the month, making things very crowded in the Mets lineup. Still the power-speed ceiling with Mauricio can’t be ignored; he had 25 homers and 31 steals between Triple-A and the majors in 2023, and although he didn’t recover from his torn ACL as quickly as expected, he seems to be running just fine now.
